Never leave lit candles unattended. it’s important to put burning candles out when you leave a room and make sure they’re completely out at night before you go to bed (or when you are about to fall asleep).
Avoid using candles in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep.
Keep candles away from anything that may burn.
Keep candles out of the reach of children who may want to play with them as well as away from all animals that may overturn them.
Use candlesticks that are stable and will not fall over easily under the weight of the candle.
Place the candlesticks on a strong, heat-resistant surface. Candles in glass or aluminum containers heat up during prolonged burning and can seriously heat the surface they are placed on.
Light the candles carefully. Keep your hair and clothes away from flames.
Do not bend over candles – your clothes and/or hair may catch fire.
Do not burn a candle completely – blow it out before it burns completely (i. e. before getting down to the wick holder or container).
Always trim the wicks. Long or crooked wicks are more likely to burn unevenly, drip or flare. Keep the wicks trimmed up to ¼” or 6-8 mm for optimal candle burning.
If you notice your candle has a high, flickering flame, it’s time you put it out and trim the wick.
Do not allow anything to get into the melted wax. Broken pieces of matches, etc. can act as a secondary wick and significantly increase the height and temperature of the flame.
Do not move candles after they are lit.
Never use candles when the power supply is switched off. Use your phone flashlight or another type of battery light.
Always light candles in a well-ventilated room, without draughts, vents or air currents. This will help prevent rapid or uneven burning, soot and dripping and wax spills.
Do not burn several candles close together, as this might cause melting between them and increase the flame size.
Ritual Candles
Candles must be placed in a stable and secure candlestick.
Hand-held candles must NOT be passed from one person to another while lighted.
When lighting candles during a religious service, have people with an unlit candle light their candles from a firmly and steadily placed already lit candle. The use of a burning candle to light candles from one person to another is dangerous.
Lit candles should not be placed on window cills where blinds or curtains might catch fire.
Candles placed on or near tables, altars or sanctuaries, should always be under constant supervision by an adult.
If a candle has to burn continuously, make sure the open flame is closed in a glass container, the candle is placed in a sink, on a metal tray or in a deep basin filled with water.
Places of worship MUST be equipped with a smoke and fire detection system.
